Sylvia Franklin Shanken Sylvia Franklin Shanken, 91, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 in Laredo, Texas. Sylvia Shanken was born to Louis and Bertha Franklin in Laredo, Texas in 1920. She earned her bachelors of Arts Degree in History from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas. After World War II, she moved to the northeast where she raised her two children and taught Spanish at Rahway High School in New Jersey. In 1978, she returned to Laredo to be close to her family and to renew her teaching career with the Laredo Independent School District at Heights Elementary School, Leo Cigarroa High School and J. W. Nixon High School. Mrs. Shanken is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Bertha Franklin; brothers-in-law, Lester Avigael and Norman Seeman. She is survived by her children, Zev (Leslie) Shanken and Levia Shanken; grandchildren, Erza (Rachel) Shanken and Miriam Shanken; sisters, Selma Avigael and Clarice Seeman; nephews, Jack (Tiki) Avigael, Alan (Fay) Seeman and Louis (Norma) Seeman; cousins, Philip (Phyllis) Freed and Sonia Wiener. May they be consoled among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 22, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Hillside Funeral Home Chapel. A service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Jewish Rest Cemetery.
