Marta C. Pena

Marta C. Peña (b. July 29, 1934) was called to be with God on February 28, 2013. She was a life-long resident of Laredo, Texas and she attended Martin High School where she met her high school sweetheart, local attorney Oscar J. Peña, Sr.. They married and had three children, Oscar J. Peña, Jr., David Peña and Marta Montemayor (Jose A. Montemayor III). Marta and Oscar spent all their time together and she helped to build and run the family’s law office located in the historic downtown area where she sat near the front door, and chatted with clients who had business and friends who just came to talk. Prior to working with her husband, Marta was a nurse for Dr. Leo Cigarroa Sr., for many years. Marta loved to travel and she visited several different locations throughout her life, including New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, and extensive travel in Mexico—but her favorite place to visit was Las Vegas where she was a well-known regular at the Flamingo Hotel. She was also a regular diner at local eateries La Mexicana and Mariscos El Pescador and she enjoyed gardening. She was a devoted mother and cherished every moment that she shared with her friends, husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her four great-grandchildren had the good fortune of being able to spend time with her and getting to know her. Marta, an only child, is preceded in death by her parents Maria de Jesus Alaniz and Jose Cuevas. She was also preceded in death by her son Oscar J. Peña, Jr.. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Oscar J. Peña, Sr., her children, David Peña and Marta Montemayor, her grandchildren, Oscar O. Peña (Doreen Puig-Peña), Karl W. Peña, Jose A. Montemayor IV, Oscar Montemayor, David Peter Peña, and her great-grandchildren, Nicolas, Ever, Christo Joaquin and David Peña. She is also survived by numerous cousins and lifelong friends. Marta will be missed by many friends and family. At Marta’s request, funeral services will be private and held at Hillside Funeral Home.
