Lupita Barrera

June 16, 1917 — November 3, 2013

Lupita Barrera Lupita Barrera, 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, November 3, 2013 in Laredo, Texas. She was a proud member and graduate of Laredo High School, Class of 1935 when it was at La Posada Hotel. She celebrated her 50th year reunion with such well-known Laredoans as Fructuoso Barrera, Chick Kazen, Chito Davila, Manuel Carrillo, Alicia Mendoza, Olga Guerra, Alicia Puig and others. She lived and worked in Laredo most of her life until her husband passed away in 1972 at which time she chose to transfer to California to be near her son, Martin Barrera. She had worked for and at Laredo Air Force Base for 20 years and chose to transfer to Mather Air Force Base in Rancho Cordova, California, a suburb of Sacramento. She stayed there another 10 years to complete 30 years with the Air Force then at the request of her son, she moved to Los Angeles where they bought a home together in Hollywood. She spent another happy 23 years there where she and her son became well known for their elaborate Easter Egg Hunts and Halloween Costume parties. They owned a beautiful two story home which looked like a mountain cabin used as a model for cabins built at Big Bear Lake by the designer and builder of many cabins in that mountain resort area. Their home was owned by Chinese actor Hop Sing, who played the cook in the Bonanza TV Series. When Lupita developed the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease, her son decided to move to a smaller home in Burbank near Warner Brothers Studios and NBC. As her condition worsened Martin decided to move to Laredo where they would be surrounded by family and old friends. They have lived in Laredo since 2007. Mrs. Barrera is preceded in death by her husband, Martin Barrera Jr.; parents, Porfirio Lozano and Josefa Villarreal; siblings, Porfirio Lozano, Jr., Josefa L. (Francisco) Martinez, Jose M.
