Virginia Ramón Cantú, 91, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, January 29, 1925 and raised in San Antonio, Texas and in Rodríguez, Nuevo Leon. In 1945, she married Florentino Cantú. A Gold Star Mother whose love of country matched her love of family, she was an advocate for education and citizen involvement inculcating the same in her children. Her community of neighbors, compadres and comadres along with her children’s friends will remember her as an advisor, role model, coach, teacher, and for her generous spirit and compassion. An accomplished seamstress, she is remembered for her outstanding creations. She touched everyone she met with her loving kindness. In her youth she was an “Hija de María.” A founding member of San Luis Rey Church, she was a long-time member of the Guadalupanas, and lived her faith deeply. EN EL CIELO ESTAS, MAMI. She is preceded in death by her husband, Florentino; her parents, Maurilio Ramón and Celia Becerra de Ramón; her son, Florentino Cantú, Jr.; and her sister, Eloisa Ramón García. She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Norma Elia (Elvia Niebla) Cantú, Laura (Alfonso) Herrera, Dr. Elsa (Hilario) Ruiz, Leticia González, Maricela (Onofre) Reyes, Sandra (Armando) Mendoza, Celia (Andrew) Salazar, Geraldina Arredondo; sons, Julio Cesar (Diana) Cantú and Ricardo Cantú; twenty-three grandchildren, and twenty-one great grandchildren; her nephews, Rene and Martin García; and her brother-in-law, Rogelio Cantú. A rosary will be recited on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hillside Funeral Home Chapel. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. from Hillside Funeral Home to San Luis Rey Catholic Church for a mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. Pallbearers will be, Maribel Portillo, Klariza González, Ana Laura Botello, Lisa Ruiz, Vanessa Cantú, Christina Cantú, Jennifer Cantú, and Karina Salazar. Honorary pallbearers will be, Selina Sánchez, Verónica Salazar, and Lydian Virginia Arredondo. Interment will follow in the family plot of the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The family would like to thank Drs. Alex Blanco, Benson Huang, and Ricardo Cigarroa and their staff for their care. We would also like to express sincere gratitude to her long-time caretakers, Maria Guadalupe (Lupita) Ramírez, Juanita (Juany) Rojas, Juanita Fuentes Loa, and her devoted neighbors, Alicia (Licha) Rayos and Laura Martínez.
