Lydia Leonor Lara

September 12, 1943 — April 15, 2017

Lydia Leonor Lara, 73, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 in Laredo, Texas in the arms of her husband, Pete, surrounded by her loving family. Lovingly known as “Nana” to her grandchildren, she loved dancing and singing. Her family was her most precious treasure, always blessing them with a bendicion to keep them safe whether they lived near or far. Her faith kept her strong and courageous during her illness. We will miss her dearly, but there is no doubt in our hearts that she is rejoicing and healed in Heaven. On December 16, 2017, Lydia and Pete would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. She worked for L.I.S.D. for 30 years as a secretary to Principal Colonel Robert J. Flores at Martin High School, to Principal Alfredo V. Montemayor at Dr. Leo G. Cigarroa High School, and to Principal Roberto Botello at the VMT Magnet School. She also was a registrar at Nixon High School and Dr. Leo G. Cigarroa High School. She retired as secretary to Principal John Cox at the VMT Magnet School. Mrs.Lara is preceded in death by her parents Francisco and Leonor G. Ortiz; special aunt Regina G. Reyna, aunt Benita O. Lerma, aunt Guadalupe Medrano; father-in-law, Eduardo Lara; mother-in-law, Maria G. Lara; sister-in-law, Dolores Lara; brother-in-law Juan E. Lara; uncles, Raymundo and Antonio Ramos. She is survived by her devoted husband Pedro “Pete” Lara, Sr., children, Pedro (Patricia) Lara Jr., Gerardo Patricio (Janie) Lara, Francisco Eduardo (Christina Gabriela) Lara, Marco Antonio (Berenice) Lara and Monica Azalea (Jose) Calcaneo; grandchildren, Darla Sophia Lara, Pedro Lara III, Valeria Lizandra Lara, Gerardo Patricio Lara Jr., Nicolas Alexander Lara, Daniel Enrique Lara, Isaac Ray Anthony Lara, Jose Alfonso Calcaneo III; siblings, Francisco (Sylvia) Ortiz, Delia Ortiz, Leonel (Maria) Ortiz, and Fernando Ortiz; sisters-in-law, Alicia L. (Tony) Cron, Rafael Q. Lara, brothers-in-law, Eduardo (Angela) Lara Jr. and Ricardo (Elizabeth) Lara; cousins Domingo O. Lerma (Cathy), Paula O. Lerma Strecker (George), Elva O. Mantz (Mike), Daniel O. Lerma (Ingrid), David O. Lerma (Carmen), Leonardo Lerma. Mrs. Lara is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends Irma Ramirez, Sylvia Castaneda, and Vicky Aguilar. A rosary will be recited on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hillside Funeral Home Chapel. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. from Hillside Funeral Home to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. A mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the family plot at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
