Felipe D. Salazar of Laredo, Texas, age 93, a life-long educator with the Laredo Independent School District, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 22, 2018. Felipe graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps serving honorably from 1943-1946. He earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. He began his teaching career with Laredo ISD in 1951 at old Katherine Tarver School, which is now La Posada Hotel. From 1953 to 1966, Felipe was a coach at Lamar Junior High. He went on to serve as an assistant principal at John Z. Leyendecker Elementary, and later as principal at Santo Nino Elementary. Due to his knowledge and talents in the trade areas he was named Director for Laredo ISD Division of Operations when it was established. Mr. Salazar served as Director until he retired in 1985. After his retirement he was always available to assist his elderly aunts and other family members with their medical and personal needs. Aside from his jobs with the school district he volunteered countless hours for the Laredo Border Olympics. He assisted with the Soap Box Derby and as a counselor at Camp Stewart in the Texas Hill Country. Aside from his numerous contributions to education, Felipe impacted the lives of many countless individuals. It was with his humble, selfless and generous spirit of service that he made a difference. Whether you were family or simply someone in need he was there to serve. Mr. Salazar was a man of principle and integrity with a strong work ethic. It was with his example that he raised his family of five children with these values. His children taught these values to their children and Felipe’s impact will continue to live through them. Mr. Salazar is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sophie Litman Salazar; his 5 children, 9 grand-children and 4 great grand-children; Phil & Diane Salazar, Jr., Norma S. Lightner (Isabel & Jake Puig [Cora, Hailey & Caiden]), Oscar [Liam Ace] & Michelle), Rick & Joanne Salazar (Callie & Katy), Cindy & George Harvilla (David & Michael), Linda & Mike Goodnight (Ethan & Connor). Felipe is also survived by his brother, Tony Salazar and his sister Sara (Cesar) Salinas along with many other brothers and sister-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. The Salazar family would like to thank his primary care physician, Dr. Idelfonzo Flores, Friends Health Care Services, his Home Health Care team (Interim Care) and especially his kind and devoted caregivers, Bertha and Mariano. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 27, 2018 at Hillside Funeral Home Chapel with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be on Saturday, July 28, 2018 with the procession at 8:30 from Hillside Funeral Home to Blessed Sacrament Church with a Mass to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Procession and interment will follow at the family plot of the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
