Heberto “Herbie” Benavides Jr., a resident of Nacogdoches, TX, passed away on March 22nd, 2022 at the age of 82 surrounded by family and the residents and caretakers he had come to love as family at the Arbor Assisted Living Center.
Heberto is survived by his children; his daughter Sandra Collier (nee Benavides); Heberto Jerry (Treicy Soto) of Miami; his grandchildren; Nicole of College Station, TX; Esteban Joel, Renata, and Catalina Benavides-Soto of Miami, Florida; honorary brother Julian Del Valle of Laredo; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his wife Amparo (nee Barreda); parents Heberto Sr. and Alicia; son-in-law Ken Collier; brother Juan Agapito; grandsons Mateo and Gael Benavides-Soto; and other beloved family members.
A lifelong educator, Heberto worked at Laredo ISD and United ISD as both a teacher for 15 years and then an educational diagnostician for 24 years. He moved to Nacogdoches in 2010 to be closer to his daughter. Here, he built a new family and community of parishioners, community members, and caretakers that took care of him during his time there. A devoted family member, he was a father to two and grandfather to six; he was also a godfather, confidant, and friend to countless others.
Born in Laredo, TX August 31, 1939, to Heberto Sr. and Alicia Benavides. He married his high school sweetheart, Amparo, in 1963. He received a bachelor's degree in 1960 and a master's degree in 1966, both from Texas A&I University Kingsville. They built a home and family together in Laredo with their children and extended family members.
A funeral mass was held Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nacogdoches, TX. A rosary will be held Monday morning, March 28th in Laredo, TX at Hillside Funeral Home followed by interment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
