Johnny Wayne Hammond of Laredo, TX, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2018. He was 71 years old. Johnny was born on January 10, 1947 in Goldthwaite, TX, son of Dee Albert Hammond and Vivian Merlene Stark. Johnny served his country in the U.S. Navy for two years. Johnny was a respected coach and an educator in Laredo for 34 years. He worked for both Laredo Independent and United Independent School Districts. He began his career in Laredo at L.J. Christen Middle School and a few years later moved on to J.W. Nixon High School. He also served as a football coach and head basketball coach at Dr. Leo Cigarroa High School for many years. He was part of the original staff as a teacher and the offensive line coach at John B. Alexander High School and he eventually retired from there. He was a wonderful educator, coach and inspiration to many. He loved his students and players, they loved and respected him as well. Johnny was valiant and fought his battle with cancer courageously for over 3 years with all the toughness, strength, and discipline that he always had in life as a man, father, coach and athlete on and off the field. Not only was he well known as a coach and loyal friend, he was also a loving husband, father, and brother. He was known as the type of man that put others before himself even towards the very end of his life. He will always be remembered and he will be missed by many. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dee Albert Hammond and Vivian Merlene Stark; sister, Frances Hammond Little; in-laws, Rosa P. Gonzalez and Alfredo Gonzalez Ch.. Johnny is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rosie Hammond; daughters, Jennifer Rose Hammond (Daniel) Rodriguez, Jessica Rae Hammond (Francisco) Martinez, Jacqueline Renee Hammond, and Janice Rebecca Hammond; grandchildren, Alejandra de la Torre and Daniel Rodriguez; brother, Gary (Marie) Hammond; sister, Jo Nell (Johnny) Miller; brother-in-law, Richard Little. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
