Rodolfo E. Reyes, known as Fito to family and friends, peacefully went home to the Lord on July 20, 2024, surrounded by family at home. He was 78.
Fito was born in Laredo, TX, the youngest of ten children who grew up in a tight-knit family that neighbors lovingly referred to as Los Reyes de San Jorge Street. He defied the odds at birth, living a long life despite doctors’ predictions that he would not. And what a blessing his life was, for he profoundly touched the lives of many in his neighborhood and beloved church community.
He attended Bruni School, L.J. Christen Middle, and graduated from Martin High School. He volunteered many years mentoring youth in sports at the Main Boys Club. There, they marveled at his talent for shooting 3 pointers and his quick reflexes made him a formidable opponent at the ping pong table.
He had an extraordinary mind for sports analysis and statistics and was a dedicated fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs. He was a fan of The Price Is Right and had a knack for correctly picking the winners. He enjoyed giving out candies on Halloween and selling his cascarones, as well as listening to his CD's outdoors and playing Dominoes. He loved to travel with family, including New Orleans, Tampa, Detroit, Graceland, Disney World, Hayling Island and London, England in the UK.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and last year, despite becoming bedridden due to ill health, sold 500 raffle tickets for the annual Jamaica. His remarkable effort was featured in a Telemundo Laredo local news story and earned him a plaque from his church for his untiring and loving service. Prior to his death, he sold 200 tickets for this year’s Jamaica.
His family, however, will remember him most for how special he made them feel every year when he’d call first thing in the morning to wish them a happy birthday. He wanted each to know how much each of them was loved.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leopoldo Cantu Reyes, his mother, Josefina Gomez Reyes, his brothers Raul Reyes (Delfina), Leopoldo (Angelina), Roberto, his sisters, Josefina Reyes, Isabel De la Garza (Lucio), Maria del Pilar, and Rosa M. Reyes, nephew, Eduardo Esquivel, niece, Maria T. Olivares (Reyes), and nephew, Anthony Robert Page.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Irma M. Reyes (Roberto+), and niece, Olivia Esquivel (Eduardo+), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins from Alaska, Florida, Texas, and the UK, and from the Gomez family in Monterrey, Mexico, the Pena Family in Laredo, Texas, and the Hernandez family in San Antonio, Texas, who will love and greatly miss him.
The family will receive condolences on Friday, July 26, 2024, from 5 to 9 pm at Hillside Funerals & Cremations, where a Rosary will be offered at 7 pm.
The funeral procession will depart the funeral chapel at 8:30 am on Saturday, July 27, 2024, to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 am.
Rite of Committal and Interment will follow the mass at the family plot at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages the purchase of Jamaica raffle tickets at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Fito’s memory.
