He died on March 7, 2020. He was born in Laredo, Texas on November 28, 1939. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Rodolfo and Amparo Zaffirini, and his son, Stephen Alan Zaffirini. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon Ann Zaffirini and his son, Anthony David Zaffirini. He is also survived by his brothers, Carlos M. Zaffirini (Judith) and Luis A. Zaffirini (Jean), and nieces and nephews. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1957. He received a B.A. Degree from Tulane University in 1961 and Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1964. He served his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA, 1964-1965. He served on active duty with the U.S. Air force as a General Medicine Officer from 1965-67 with the rank of Captain in the Medical Corps. He did his residency training in ophthalmology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, from 1967-1970. During his first year of residency he attended the Harvard Basic Science Course in Ophthalmology in Boston, Massachusetts. He won a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was a Member of the Webb-Zapata-Jim Hogg Counties Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, and the Texas Ophthalmological Association. He was a Past President of the Baylor Ophthalmology Alumni Association. He practiced Ophthalmology in Laredo, from 1970 to 2017. At his request, he was cremated and no memorial service will be held. Whoever wishes may make a contribution in his memory to the charity of their choice.
