Rosa Maria Villarreal Rosa Maria Villarreal, also known as Rosie Villarreal by her friends and Coach V by many of her volleyball players, 59 years of age, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017 in Austin, Texas. Rosie was born July 2, 1958 in Laredo, Texas. Rosie graduated from Nixon High School and obtained her Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology from Texas Women’s University. Rosie’s 35 year coaching career spanned from Lamar Middle School where she spent her first year and moved on to Memorial Middle School where she spent another 6 years. In 1989 she took over as the Head Volleyball Coach at Nixon High School where she spent 7 years before leaving to Cotulla, Texas to start a Volleyball program that was non-existent. She spent 5 years there and when the position in Zapata High School came available she moved on and for 12 years Villarreal led the Lady Hawks to having one of the most successful runs in the program’s history. Villarreal helped bring Zapata eight district championships, five bi-district championships and had the Lady Hawks in the playoffs nine out of 12 years. Rosie professed her life to Christ at an early age. She was very much involved with Guadalupe Church. She loved working in the church and cherished praising the Lord. Serving on several committees, always enjoying helping others. Rosie loved her faith, praying for and with others, spending time with family, laughing and always wearing a smile on her face. Her greatest passion was her love for family and she always made time to attend a family milestone. She loved all her nieces and nephews as if they were her own. She was a loving and caring person, devoted sister, aunt, cousin and friend, always thinking of others first. “To know her was to love her.” She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Amparo S. Villarreal; brothers, Hector Villarreal, Oscar Villarreal Jr., and Jorge Villarreal’ sister, Laura S. Sanchez. Rosie leaves to cherish her loving memory her siblings, Javier Villarreal, Ricardo (Nora) Villarreal, Anita Villarreal Chapman, Maria Cecilia (John) Frost, Graciela Villarreal; nieces and nephews, Zane Villarreal, Zoe Villarreal, Miguel O. Sanchez, Danny Sanchez, Christina Sanchez Hatfield, Veronica Keys, Jesus Villarreal, Georgina Villarreal, Rebecca Chapman, Natalie Chapman, Erica Chapman, Oscar Frost, David Frost, Teresa Marie Frost, Richard A. Villarreal, George A, Villarreal. Also surviving are numerous, aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces, great- nephews, other relatives and friends, especially Fr. Richard Hall, O.M.I., and Fr. David Muñoz, O.M.I., who meant the world to her and together they spread the word of God. A rosary will be recited on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church , 1718 San Jorge, Laredo, Texas 78040. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. from Hillside Funeral Home to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. A mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the family plot of the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Oscar Frost, David Frost, Ricky Villarreal, George Villarreal, Oscar Garza, Jerry Garza, Miguel Sanchez and Jesse Mendez.
