Sheila Slaughter Glassford died on Saturday evening from complications of pneumonia. She was 85 years old. Born in Laredo in 1934, she was a member of the Martin High School Class of 1951. She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in Spanish in 1955, where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. After graduation, she began her career working with her father in the family produce business, David M. Slaughter and Son. She met her husband in South Texas, George Edward “Chris” Glassford, and they were married in 1957. With her mother, brother, and sister-in-law they opened The Jardiniere, a home furnishings and design store. Sheila was very active in the Laredo community and was a member of the Society of Martha Washington where she was presented in 1951, portrayed Martha Washington (1973) and served as President (1975). She represented Laredo at the Order of the Alamo Battle of Flowers in San Antonio in 1955. She was also a member of the Pan American Round Table, The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Luncheon Club, The Kidney Foundation of Laredo and her local book club. She participated for many years in the naturalization ceremonies for new citizens, Civic Music, The Laredo Philharmonic, and The American Cancer Society. She was a lifelong member of the congregation of Christ Church Episcopal. She loved to travel, and continued to do so later in life with her family on trips to Europe, Mexico, and California. Sheila is preceded in death by G.E. “Chris”, her husband of 53 years, her mother (Ophelia Thurmond Slaughter), father (David Slaughter), and her sister (Davyne Slaughter Griffin). She is survived by her children Kristina Hanley (Robert), Edward Glassford (Roseann), Thomas Glassford, Peter Glassford (Isabel), and Andrew Glassford (Robert Thaggard); brother David Slaughter Jr. (Millie), brother-in-law Ike Griffin; grandchildren William and Morgan Hanley, Juan Glassford, Christopher Glassford, and Elijah Glassford. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at Christ Church Episcopal from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at Christ Church Episcopal at 10:30 a.m., with interment services to follow at the City of Laredo Cemetery.
