Tomas M. Palacios Sr., 90, entered into eternal rest on Friday March 15, 2024 in Laredo, Texas. Tomas was the sixth child born to Rita Palacios Segura and Rito Palacios. Tomas was married to his wife Elfida Palacios for 64 years and in those years they were able to create a beautiful life together with: 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Tomas was a member of San Luis Rey Church and Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
At the age of 11, Tomas picked up the game of golf and quickly formed a love for the game that would stretch for decades and be passed on to his family. Tomas became the first Laredoan to play golf at the University of Oklahoma. Tomas played golf at the professional level in the United States and Mexico. He was a six time Champion of the Laredo City Open Championship. In 2001, Laredo Morning Times listed him among Laredo’s 100 greatest sports stars of the last century.
He worked with Conoco for many years, was self employed running a transportation company. Additionally, he owned a clay house pottery business and owned and operated a golf-driving range, where many were taught the game of golf. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and mentor to many.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Rito & Rita Palacios, his Brothers: Jose Angel Palacios, Roberto Palacios, Vidal Palacios, Reynaldo Palacios, and Rodolfo Palacios, Sisters: Alicia Palacios, Delia P. Valdez, Noemi P. Mattheis, Raquel P. Garza, and Herminia P. Vallejo, Granddaughter: Danielle A. Smith, Son in law: James F. Cooper lll, Daughters in law: Yolanda Peña Palacios and Laura Diaz, Father & Mother in law: Roman Perez Jr. , Alicia G. Sanchez. Other brothers and sisters in law, and other family members.
Left behind to cherish his memory is his wife Elfida Palacios, children, 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Sons: Tomas (Diana) Palacios Jr., Gerardo (Araceli Parra)Palacios, Daughters: Dora Cooper, Nora (Tom) Smith, Elfida (Michael) Rodriguez, Araceli (Frank) Huerta. Tomas is also survived by his sisters: Maria de la Luz Tijerina, Carmen Gloria Palacios and Guadalupe P. Gomez, brothers: Ramiro (Celia) Palacios and Rito (Gloria) Palacios, Jose Luis Palacios, Grandchildren: Angela, Tomas lll, Desiree, Sergio, Gerardo Jr., Ricardo, James IV, Benjamin, Nicole, Kayla, Alejandro, Marco, Lorenzo, Great-grandchildren: Cynthia, Ricardo Jr., Diego, Sofia, Hailee, Melina, Jezebel, Mateo, Olivia, James V, Luca, Elora, Elaine, Ezekiel, Isabella. Along with brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Family would like to extend the most heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ricardo G. Cigarroa, Dr. Daniel Bell, Dr. Mohsen Ghadimi-Mahani, and staff at Altus Hospice for the care and compassion they showed for our loved one during this difficult time.
Pallbearers will be Tomas Palacios III, Sergio Palacios, Benjamin Palacios, James F. Cooper IV, Gerardo Palacios Jr., Ricardo Palacios, Alejandro Huerta, Marco Huerta, Lorenzo Huerta, Ricardo Elizondo Jr.
